Subject: Trouble Logging into the Filing Information Returns Electronically (FIRE) System

Audience: Payroll Industry, Tax Professionals, Small Business and Self Employed, Tax Exempt and Government Entities, Financial Institutions

Alert: Please read!

If you receive an error message when attempting to log in and do not have an IR Application for TCC, you must complete one now because your TCC is no longer active, and you will need to create a FIRE Account. For more information, go to FIRE.

If you have an IR Application for TCC, use the legal name, EIN and TCC as it appears on the application.

Avoid calling the help desk, as it cannot provide any additional information.

Important Tips:

  • Verify all Authorized Users on the application have an ID.me account before you sign it. You will receive the error message: "All users must register with e-Services before your application can be submitted" when an unregistered user exists. It may take up to 72 hours for a new account to be recognized.
  • Select the 'Individual' option on the 'Select Your Organization' page each time the application is accessed until in 'Completed' status.
  • Read the IR Application tutorial by selecting the "Online Tutorials" tab on the External Services Authorization Management page.
  • Monitor the 'TCC Information' section on the 'Application Summary' page for TCC assignment. Wait 48 hours from the effective date before creating a FIRE Account or using the TCC.

Note: A FIRE TCC consists of 5 alpha-numeric characters and starts with a numeric. Visit E-file information returns for more information.

Password/PIN Issues

If you need a password/PIN reset and can't reach the help desk, you may create a new FIRE Account.

If you are concerned that you may not have your TCC before the filing due date:

  •  Use a third-party transmitter.
  •  Submit a request for an extension of time using the FIRE System Fill-in Extension of Time request. A FIRE System Account is needed but a TCC is not required.
  • Submit paper Form 8809 for Forms 1099-NEC and W-2.
  • Consider Form 8508, Application for a Waiver from Electronic Filing of Information Returns.
