IRS begins 2023 Dirty Dozen campaign next week

Annual effort highlights important warnings for taxpayers, tax pros to protect against scams, schemes

WASHINGTON — Continuing an ongoing public awareness effort, the Internal Revenue Service will launch its 2023 Dirty Dozen campaign next with daily news releases that warn taxpayers about prevalent scams and schemes they're seeing this tax season.

The IRS annual Dirty Dozen is a list of 12 scams and schemes alerting taxpayers and the tax professional community about threats that jeopardize personal finances as well as risk identity theft and data loss. Some items on the list are new and some make a return visit.

The list begins with an important warning about promoters of improper Employer Retention Credit claims, followed by fake charities and scams aimed at taxpayers at home, including phishing and smishing. The list also highlights information, including spearphishing, intended to help businesses and tax professionals avoid falling victim. Rounding out the campaign are schemes aimed at high-income filers and bogus tax avoidance strategies, among others.

As part of the Dirty Dozen awareness effort, the IRS will also provide information on how to report scams and abusive tax schemes.

While the list is not a legal document or a formal listing of agency enforcement priorities, it is intended to alert taxpayers and the tax professional community about various scams and schemes at large.
