1.  IRS Webinar: "Understanding the Gig Economy" explains key tax concepts to the self-employed community


The IRS will host a webinar on the gig, or "sharing" economy on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2020 at 2  p.m. ET. The free 60-minute webinar is open to all, and will cover the following:

  • What is the Gig Economy?
  • How does a gig worker know if they are an employee or self-employed?
  • Business expenses and recordkeeping for gig workers
  • Rules for home rentals
  • Tax payment options for gig workers

2.  New Identity Theft Central now available at IRS.gov


The IRS has launched Identity Theft Central, designed to improve online access to information on identity theft and data security protection for businesses, individual taxpayers and tax pros.

Identity Theft Central is available 24/7 at IRS.gov/identitytheft and includes:

  • How businesses can recognize the signs of identity theft.
  • The Taxpayer Guide to Identity Theft, including what to do when a victim of identity theft.
  • Identity theft Information for tax professionals, including knowing responsibilities under the law.

3.  Work Opportunity Tax Credit extended to January 2021


The IRS recently announced that the Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) has been extended to Jan. 1, 2021.The WOTC is a federal tax credit available to employers for hiring individuals from certain targeted groups who have consistently faced significant barriers to employment.
