Subject:  Modernized e-File (MeF) Rule updates due to IR-2021-59


Attention: Software Developers, Return Transmitters and Authorized IRS e-file Providers/EROs 

 

On March 17, 2021, the IRS published IR-2021-59, Tax Day for individuals extended to May 17: Treasury, IRS extended filing and payment deadline.

The Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service announced the federal income tax filing due date and federal income tax payments for individuals for Tax Year 2020 will be automatically extended from April 15, 2021 to May 17, 2021. 

The IRS updated MeF business rules to allow for the relief. The business rules listed below were:

  • disabled on Sunday, March 28, 2021
  • subsequently adjusted on Wednesday, March 31, 2021
  • and will be re-enabled on May 18, 2021

The Tax Year 2020 relevant form(s) and related business rule numbers are: 

  • Form 4868 business rules F4868-001-02 and FPYMT-050-01

  • Forms 1040, 1040-NR and 1040-SS/PR business rules FPYMT-072-01 and FPYMT-074-01
  • Form 1040 business rules FPYMT-100 and FPYMT-101
